A horse feed formulated with the elevated nutrient requirements of broodmares and foals is best for this group of horses to ensure they receive enough protein, vitamins and minerals to support pregnancy, lactation, growth and development. Our line of Growth feeds, as well as our ration balancers (fed at appropriate levels), are designed to properly support the nutrient needs of pregnant and lactating broodmares, as well as weanlings and yearlings. For foals less than 3 months of age, we recommend creep feeding Foal Foundation™.
Horse feeds specifically designed to support mares and foals have elevated levels of vitamins, minerals and protein to support the demands of pregnant and lactating mares, as well as growing and developing foals.
Foals under 3 months of age should have free-choice access to Foal Foundation™ in a creep feeder. Foals 3 months of age or older should be transitioned to Growth (or a ration balancers) and can be fed at the same times the mare is fed to help keep them out of the mare’s feed ration. Two or more horse feed meals per day are recommended to support nutrient absorption and help decrease the risk of digestive issues.
It is highly recommended that mares be fed a mare and foal feed, like Growth, or proper levels of a ration balancer, like Essential K®, prior to conception to support proper fetal development from the start.
We highly recommend both pregnant and lactating mares be fed Growth (or the appropriate ration balancer). Growth has higher levels of protein, vitamins and minerals to support the extra demand on pregnant and lactating mares’ bodies.
The amount of Growth (or ration balancer) to feed a pregnant mare will depend on many factors, including her weight, body condition and the type and amount of hay she is fed. Our team is always happy to help design personalized feeding plans based on a horse’s individual needs!
We recommend introducing Foal Foundation™ at 1 week of age. Provide Foal Foundation™ in a creep feeder and allow the foal free-choice access.
