Our pelleted Kalm ‘N EZ® products (Kalm ‘N EZ® Pellet, Kalm’ N EZ® GC Plus, Soy-Free Kalm ‘N EZ® and Non-GMO Kalm ‘N EZ®) are 13.5% NSC (sugar/starch) and Kalm ‘N EZ® Textured is 15.5% NSC.
Low NSC (sugar/starch) horse feeds are healthier for the digestive system and linked to decreased risk of ulcers and colic. Further, low NSC feeds can help reduce hyperactivity and help prevent metabolic issues, like Equine Metabolic Syndrome, later in life. For horses that do have sugar and starch sensitivities, such as Insulin Resistance or PSSM Type 1, a low NSC diet is extremely important to keep the horse as healthy as possible.
While an understanding of the horse’s total diet would be necessary to make the best recommendation (we can help you here), we almost always try to reduce NSC (sugar/starch) intake in horses that have sensitive digestive tracts. Our pelleted Kalm ‘N EZ® options would be very appropriate choices for horses with sensitive stomachs due to their very low NSC levels of 13.5%. Low NSC diets are easier on a horse’s entire digestive tract, including their stomach.
While it’s important to get to the root cause of the digestive problems and, if needed, treat accordingly, we generally recommend feeding horses with digestive problems a low sugar/starch (NSC) feed that is also high in digestible fiber, such as Kalm ‘N EZ®. In addition, we typically recommend adding our Constant Comfort® gut health system to the diet, too. Finally, it’s also important to provide a quality source of soft hay.
Despite the name, there are no calming ingredients in Kalm ‘N EZ®. It’s actually what is not in the feed that helps prevent hot or hyperactive behavior in horses - no oats, corn or molasses! Kalm N EZ® is very low in sugar/starch (13.5% NSC) and, instead, provides calories through quality fat and high fiber levels. The term “kalm” also pays tribute to our parent company, Kalmbach Feeds®!
Kalm ‘N EZ®, by definition, is a complete horse feed because its crude fiber level is high enough (>15%) to replace the forage portion of a horse’s diet, if necessary. Read more about complete feeds and if your horse needs one here.
